Epistemic freedom

Definition

Epistemic freedom evaluates whether people can actually encounter, preserve, compare, and articulate competing descriptions—not merely whether formal rules say speech is permitted.

Also used here as: freedom of inquiry, practical freedom of thought.

Why it matters

A system can technically permit speech while narrowing the information, education, memory, or classifications from which judgment is formed. That makes epistemic freedom a legitimacy test rather than a decorative right.
